Ok… this year we have been traveling vagabonds and due to my husbands desire to become a better football coach we as a family have landed in “Antigonish”. A small University town in Nova Scotia, Canada. With my love of gardening I quickly realized that following your partners dream need not stop myself from my desires for sustainable living and organic gardening.
How did I over come the challenge of living in an urban area as a renter, while still growing a small families garden?
First, I asked about a local farmer’s market. Which lead me to a community gardening project. The location of the garden was behind the University campus and it made our decision to rent a house close by ( 10 minute walk) one of the main factors. My garden plot.
I wanted to experiment in becoming more sustainable so we parked the truck more often this summer and I walked to the garden every other day to check on it. This particular community garden was fantastic! It was my first time doing community gardening, as I was a home owner prior.
As a community gardener we each got at 5 x 8 raised garden plot and I managed to grow alot on vertical trellis. ( first time for that too).
Here are some of our gardening experiments photographs from start to finish. The plot was completely free of charge and the program even went as far as giving many of us free seeds and starter plants from the local nursery.
I particularly liked the community aspect, we shared seeds, and helped with watering while on vacation.
